Lily Montessori

Applying for the Ottawa child care subsidy is a straightforward process, but it's helpful to be prepared with all the necessary information and steps. Here's a guide to walk you through:

Eligibility:

Before you apply, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:

  • Be a resident of Ottawa.

  • Have a child under 12 years old who needs child care.

  • Meet the financial income requirements. Your family's net income (line 23600 on your tax assessment) must be below the established thresholds, which vary depending on the number of children you have. You can find the current income thresholds on the City of Ottawa website.

  • Have a reason for needing child care. This could include employment, education, training, searching for work, having a medical condition, or caring for another child with special needs.

Application Process:

  1. Create an account or log in to the Child Care Registry and Waitlist: https://ottawa.ca/en/family-and-social-services/childrens-services/apply-child-care

  2. Complete the parent and child details information screens.

  3. Apply to the childcare programs that best meet your needs:

  • Select "Subsidy (I need help to pay my daycare costs)" for each child requiring care.

  • Choose the appropriate start date of care.

  • Select the provider type (centre-based, home-based, school age or nursery) that meets your needs.

  • Select the program type (full days, part days, before and/or after school, PD days etc.).

  1. Submit the required documents:

  • Proof of income: Your most recent tax assessment(s) for all family members aged 16 and over.

  • Proof of child's age: Birth certificate or Canadian passport.

  • Proof of residency: Driver's license, utility bill, or other government-issued document with your Ottawa address.

  • Reason for needing childcare: Proof of employment, school enrolment, training program registration, doctor's note, etc.

  1. Review and submit your application.

Once you submit your application:

  • You will receive a confirmation email stating whether your application is complete or incomplete.

  • If incomplete, you will need to log back in and provide the missing information.

  • Once complete, your application will be assessed by the City of Ottawa to determine your eligibility for the subsidy.

  • You will be notified of the decision within 4 to 6 weeks.
